Drug Treatments – Varied as Drug Addictions

The concept covered by the deceptively simple term addiction is anything but simple. The nature of drug or alcohol addiction is highly complex and gives rise to a wide range of malfunctions that adversely affect a number of critical chemical processes within the brain. It is not, therefore, surprising that the drug treatments required to counter these effects are equally complex and varied.

One consistent finding that becomes evident when investigating the various addiction therapies is that there is no single treatment protocol that is suitable for all patients. Furthermore, to be effective, drug treatments must also be able to address far more than just the drug abuse and thus need also to focus on the many related needs of the patient.

It is a commonly held belief that drug treatments are only effective when patients submit themselves voluntarily to them; that in order to be helped, in fact, an addict must first want to be helped. However, compulsory treatment is very often imposed by the courts in the case of drug-related crime.  drug rehab centres

Likewise, a parents or relative may often sanction involuntary treatment of a loved one. Such cases have been shown to respond just as well as volunteer patients, suggesting that it is the treatment more than the mind-set that determines success.

One important feature that should be common to any and all drug treatments is the screening of patients for evidence of infection. All too often, patients afflicted with severe addictions fall victim to complicating infections such as HIV/AIDS, the B and C strains of hepatitis and tuberculosis among others. Even in the absence of such disease, any counselling programme should stress the increased risks and how best to avoid infection,

Detoxification and management of withdrawal symptoms comprise just one component of the range of available drug treatments and without concurrent attention to secondary health issues, the emotional trauma and the spiritual needs of addicts, the chances of success are seriously diminished.

Treatment Centres Play Increasingly Important Role

As a result of the steady growth of substance abuse during the past decade and a half, there has been an increasing need to establish specialist treatment centres within reach of all who may need them. From a logistic viewpoint, however, the task of serving addicts in rural communities is not a simple one and it is fortunate that most cases in need of treatment are concentrated in and around the larger urban developments.

Having said that, it has been observed that there may be distinct benefits to patient recovery when locating treatment centres in areas that are quieter and, perhaps, less reminiscent of the environment in which the patient’s initial addiction may have occurred. Either way, it seems that attractive and peaceful surroundings, whether provided by a natural setting or by cultivated gardens, can contribute positively to the recovery of a significant number of patients.

Treatment centres today may still offer widely differing therapeutic options as there is still no recognized protocol that has been universally adopted in the rehabilitation of alcohol or drug abusers. In addition, the extent of the available treatments may, in some cases, be limited by the availability of funding from charitable organizations or municipal budgets while private facilities may preclude all but the more affluent patients.

How To Detect the Signs Of Alcoholism

Read here at rttnews.com on Whiteney Houston's drug rehab programme. Can you see why a drug treatment centre is so important for true recovery?

Changing attitudes by both employers and medical insurers have served to make treatment centres accessible to more alcohol and drug abuse victims than was ever possible before. Enlightened employers, in particular, have begun to count the cost of simply dismissing some highly trained but addicted staff member rather than contributing to his or her recovery. In many cases company policy may now allow extended leave with at least partial remuneration during treatment.

For their part, the medical aid societies have, for some time now recognized that contributing to a course of therapy at one of the recognised treatment centres can provide a hedge against the much higher costs of complications arising from a prolonged, untreated addiction.

Effective Treatment For Alcoholism Is At Hand

Despite the fact that addiction to liquor is now generally recognised as a disease process rather than the consequence of some character weakness, medicine has yet to come up with a pill or potion that is effective as a complete treatment for alcoholism.

There are, however, a number of medications that serve to reduce the characteristic craving in those with a genuine desire to overcome their dependence. Also, there are medications to help patients maintain their abstinence once they have quit drinking.

Unlike the use of narcotics, the consumption of alcohol is both legal and socially acceptable in most societies when undertaken in moderation. Alcoholics form only a relatively small percentage of those who drink alcohol regularly without ever developing an addiction. One other difference between alcoholics and drug addicts is that the former must normally wish to be cured if treatment for alcoholism is to succeed.

alcohol and drugsEven those patients that enter into rehabilitation programmes voluntarily are quite likely to experience a relapse or two before their treatment for alcoholism is completed and they are able to remain sober on an on-going basis. Even then, relapses after many years are not uncommon.

The tendency of alcoholics to remain prone to relapses underlines the important role that is played by support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous in supplementing any treatment for alcoholism. Membership of such a group is, in itself, a form of therapy particularly during the early stages of treatment. The testimony of those who have experienced the same cravings and managed to overcome them can provide a powerful motivator to a fellow alcoholic in times of temptation.

Although the vast majority of alcoholics that undergo treatment for alcoholism experience relatively mild symptoms of withdrawal and their therapy may usually be undertaken at outpatient facilities given the security of a support group. About 5% however experience severe withdrawal that could prove life-threatening and for these, hospitalization is vital.

We will do whatever it takes ...

SCRC's approach is aimed at facilitating change from the culture of addiction to the culture of recovery.

This process will yield limited success when approached outside of a residential treatment facility particularly when detoxification is required. It is imperative that individuals entering treatment are given as much training and education as possible.
