Drugs And Alcohol - The Threat Posed

We live in a society that is increasingly obsessed with instant gratification. Hedonism is at the order of the day and there is a constant search for an escape from responsibility. Many find this escape in drugs and alcohol. While certainly not a new occurrence, it does seem that the abuse of these substances is on the increase rather than decline, causing a very serious social problem.

While it can be argued that an individual is responsible for their own actions and should be free to make their own choices, the truth is that drugs and alcohol abuse do not only affect the individual who is taking it, but also very often ruin other, innocent people’s lives in the process. In the best interest of the health of the addict as well as the people he or she come into contact with, help should be provided to these individuals wherever possible.

There are a number of rehabilitation centres available that offer treatment to those who abuse drugs and alcohol. While the intent is certainly good, not all of these are equally successful, so it is important to carefully select a treatment facility that has a respectable success rate and offer a holistic approach to the treatment of an addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Many of these facilities do not only offer treatment to the primary patient, but also to relatives and friends affected by the abuse of drugs and alcohol. This serves two functions – to help these individuals heal from their wounds, as well as to help them understand and support the addict once rehabilitation has been completed. This ensures a higher success rate as it minimises the chance of a relapse.

SCRC's approach is aimed at facilitating change from the culture of addiction to the culture of recovery.

This process will yield limited success when approached outside of a residential treatment facility particularly when detoxification is required. It is imperative that individuals entering treatment are given as much training and education as possible.
