Anthropologist Michael Agar once described diacetylmorphine, also known as heroin, as "the perfect whatever drug." It is used as a recreational drug for the transcendent relaxation and intense euphoria it induces. This good feeling is short-lived though, and the side-effects far outweigh the pleasure it provides. The drug is highly addictive and withdrawal symptoms can occur among new users mere hours after the drug use. This makes heroin recovery difficult, as the urge to use is very strong. In addition, heroin recovery can also be very dangerous if not done correctly.
Tolerance quickly develops with heroin use, requiring larger doses to obtain the same high. Withdrawal symptoms between hits or even when the doses are not large enough can include:
In contrast with the instantaneous feeling of euphoria provided by the drug, heroin can cause feelings of depression which can last for weeks. This depression can be overwhelming during heroin recovery, resulting in many users simply giving up on the recovery process and rather seeking more drugs again to overcome this extreme feeling. Many will go to just about any length to lay their hands on another heroin hit.
Because of this strong addiction, professional help is required for successful, sustainable heroin recovery. The withdrawal of the drug can also lead to serious health complications, including severe cases of the symptoms mentioned above. Because of this, heroin recovery treatment should include medical monitoring and care.

SCRC's approach is aimed at facilitating change from the culture of addiction to the culture of recovery.
This process will yield limited success when approached outside of a residential treatment facility particularly when detoxification is required. It is imperative that individuals entering treatment are given as much training and education as possible.
I don' know what I would've done without many of you. Thank you for giving me the gift of life.
I'll never forget SCRC and everyone involved!
